Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, and so she was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. When she was a young girl she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to the word association. Ford started to become attracted to acting at the age of teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she didn't fit in. Ford applied again to Central School of Speech and Drama and on her fourth application she was accepted. One of her classmates was Shaun Dingwall, who would later have a recurring role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993, but she made her television debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate made her television debut in 1991and appeared in shows such as The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Tate also performed regularly in the theatre, eventually being a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy, which she began adding to her set in the year 1996, was soon gaining her admiration.
